By Tribune Staff ReportDecember 11, 2008
A DuPage County judge has ordered weekly inspections of a controversial Bloomingdale animal shelter by a veterinarian and a state worker.DuPage Judge Ronald Sutter on Wednesday ordered Pet Rescue to allow a veterinarian from DuPage County Animal Control and a representative of the Illinois Department of Agriculture, which regulates animal shelters, to have access to the facility. The shelter, at 151 N. Bloomingdale Rd., has been the subject of protests from residents who charge that the shelter doesn’t provide the necessary medical care and that the treatment of the animals is substandard.Shelter representatives said previous inspections didn’t occur because of scheduling problems.Pet Rescue Inc., as well as Dale Armon, 74, of Berkeley, the facility’s owner, and Penny Horak, 69, of Winfield, a shelter director, each have been charged with 16 counts of animal neglect and are set to go on trial March 23.
